When Emily Foster from Kent, England, went in for a routine ultrasound at 20 weeks pregnant, she expected to see the usual—tiny kicks, a beating heart, and maybe a wave from her baby girl she eagerly expected to welcome into her life.
However, what she saw stunned both her and the doctors.
While performing the ultrasound, the sonographer looked at the monitor all puzzled, but then she smiled and said, “Wait a minute. Is that hair?” One of the doctors approached closer and said jokingly, “Looks like you’ve got a little rock star in there — she might just skip the baby baldness entirely!”
Indeed, the ultrasound showed wispy strands swaying underwater like seaweed.

Some two months later, baby Ivy was born, and her hair was as thick and as long as that of a two-year-old child. The doctors and nurses said they had never seen anything like it before. They also explained to the young mother that children being born with hair wasn’t anything unusual since their hair starts growing in the womb as early as 30 weeks. What was remarkable was that Ivy’s hair was visible during the scan, and that it was unusually long for a newborn baby.

When Emily’s story spread online, a lot of people reacted to the photos of the ultrasound showing Ivy’s hair. Some parents even shared similar experiences with one person writing, “My baby was born with such long hair I had to trim it right after we got home so it wouldn’t be in his eyes.” Another shared, “My baby girl was born with bangs and left the hospital already rocking bows in her hair!”
Every child is a little miracle in their own right. Baby Ivy’s unique looks is just a reminder that nature’s little wonders come in all shapes and forms.
