Doctor warns: A common habit may double the risk of a heart attack

Dr. Hilary Jones, a renowned British doctor known for his frequent appearances on various TV programmes, including Good Morning Britain, has shared his insights on heart health.

Holding a life-sized anatomical model of the human heart, Dr. Jones reminded everyone of the hard work our heart does for us.

“Take a look at this—this is exactly what your heart looks like,” he said. “I think you’ll agree, considering what it does for you, that it’s worth looking after.”

He highlighted some of the crucial things everyone should follow in order to keep their heart safe. They include leading a healthy lifestyle, maintaining a healthy weight, exercise regularly, manage the stress, reduce the cholesterol, and the most important of all, quit smoking.

“Don’t smoke—your heart hates that,” Dr. Jones states through Healthspan’s Instagram channel.

According to him, quitting smoking is number one preventable cause of stroke and heart issues.

According to HRI, with every cigarette smoked, around 7,000 chemicals are inhaled, including carbon monoxide, nicotine, ammonia, and tar.

These chemicals get into the bloodstream and make the walls of the arteries sticky, increasing the number of fatty deposits (known as plaques) that stick to the artery walls and build up over time. Eventually, this leads to a condition known as atherosclerosis, the main cause of cardiovascular disease.

HRI states that in UK only around 20,000 people die of smoking every year.

Dr. Jones says that quitting smoking is probably the best decision every smoker out there can ever make.

By doing it, you cut the risk of heart disease and a heart attack in half only after a year of breaking the habit, lower the risk of stroke, improve respiratory functions, and reduce stress and anxiety over time.

Speaking of the importance of managing a healthy weight, the renowned GP states, “Don’t strain it [your heart] by carrying too much weight, exercise it regularly – it’s a muscle – it loves a bit of exercise.”

He also emphasizes the dangers of high blood pressure. “Millions of people are walking around with high blood pressure and don’t even know it,” he says.

Dr. Jones advises people to follow a healthy lifestyle in order to reduce the risk of a heart attack and reminds them that heart disease is often preventable. “Your heart works hard for you every single day,” Dr. Hilary adds. “It’s time we gave it the care it deserves.”
