Carville doubts Harris can mount a 2028 bid following presidential defeat

James Carville, a veteran Democratic strategist and architect behind Bill Clinton’s 1992 presidential victory, delivered a blunt message that has stirred conversation within the party. According to him, former Vice President Kamala Harris faces an uphill battle for any future presidential bid.

And coming from Carville that’s no small thing because in American politics, few people’s opinions carry more weight than veterans who’ve seen countless careers rise and fall.

Speaking on his Politics War Room podcast, Carville said that Harris is unlikely to be a factor in the 2028 fight for the Democratic nomination despite the speculations that her decision not to run for California governor gives her room to mount another campaign in 2028.

Carville’s reasoning comes from a broader party desire to move past the 2024 election, where Harris’ campaign, despite strong backing and resources, ultimately fell short. “Anybody that had anything to do with 2024, the party wants to move on from that,” he explained, emphasizing that this isn’t personal, but political reality.

Carville’s warning also reached Harris’ running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, and others linked to the 2024 campaign.

In fact, the strategist’s message was straightforward—that their political futures in the Democratic Party are limited, and that they need to move forward with caution.

“This goes to Walz, too. I wouldn’t run again,” he said.

“That would be my – if I were your friend, if I would be your chief advisor, I’m doing this not – from a personal standpoint. This is not going to be the environment that a 2024 Democrat that – the Democrats are not going to look to anybody that had anything to do with the 2024 campaign.”

Of course, Carville never questioned Harris’ impressive résumé, but said that candidates must learn from past mistakes and adapt to remain relevant. He pointed to what he believed was a flaw at the presidential campaign and that was her failure to sell voters on why change was needed, leaving her message weak at critical points.

It seems like the 2028 Democratic field is already starting to take shape. While some doors may be closing, there are opportunities for others to step forward.

At this point, despite losing the 2024 elections to current President Donald Trump, Kamala Harris remains a prominent figure within the Democratic Party.
