Acts of kindness, no matter how big or small, always go a long way and come in full circles.
Below are three uplifting stories of selflessness that will remind you yet again that being there for those in need and lending a helping hand is what makes this world go round.
1. I covered a stranger’s grocery bill, and it resulted in my grandma’s $230k treatment
Mark, a 12-year-old boy, was at the grocery story. He needed to grab some things for his grandmother, who was old, sick, and needed to undergo a surgery that a lot of money; more than Mark and his family could ever make.
While at the cash register, he noticed a woman who was having troubles finding any money in her purse. She had forgotten her wallet in her friend’s car and couldn’t pay, which meant she needed to return the items. Mark, however, wouldn’t let that happen.
Although he had never seen that woman before, he decided to pay for her groceries because he knew that the acts of kindness of today would come with a reward tomorrow.
That was something he learned from his grandma.
The woman didn’t want to accept the $20 at first, but eventually, she agreed and asked Mark to give her his phone number so that she could return the money the following day.
When the morning emerged, the woman called Mark and asked for his address. He told her she didn’t need to return the money, but she insisted.
Once at his home, the woman became aware of Mark’s living conditions and his grandma’s health problems.
She felt sorry and decided to do something about it.
When she suggested starting a GoFundMe, Mark told her he and his family and his family had already started a fundraiser, but raised very little money.
The woman’s daughter, Anastacia, shared Mark’s GoFundMe link with her network and shared his story on Reddit.
In no time, the story went viral and the final result was $230,000 raised for his grandma’s treatment.
Not ever, not even in his wildest dreams, did this young man believe that his act of kindness would change his and his grandma’s life in a profound way.
2. I gave my last dollar to a stranger and met him again at my prom
Carly lived a modest life with her mother and grandmother. They struggled to make ends meet, but they still did all in their power to provide Carly with the life she deserved.
With the prom night just around the corner, Carly’s mom and grandma gifted her an envelope with money for her dream dress.
Needless to say, Carly was over the moon and couldn’t wait to purchase the gown. She quickly got out of the house and took the bus to the city center.
However, the moment she got on the bus, she heard the driver and another worker arguing with a man in his sixties who didn’t have a ticket. They insisted he pay a fine or they would alert the police. The man explained that he didn’t have any money and was in a rush to see his sick daughter at the hospital. But, they didn’t want to listen.
While the rest of the passengers were just looking at the man, Carly approached and offered to pay his fine.
Helping the man meant she wouldn’t be able to buy her dress, but she didn’t care.
Once home, she shared the experience with her mom and grandma, and while her mom was a bit mad and said the man was probably lying, her grandma assured her that the acts of kindness she showed to others defined the person she was, and that Carly had a heart of gold.
On the night of her prom, Carly wore her old dress. Looking at the rest of the girls, who were dressed in lovely gowns, she felt a bit ashamed. But at that moment, she felt a hand on her shoulder. It was the man whose fine she paid. He was together with his daughter, who was now out of the hospital and feeling well.
They handed Carly a wrapped box. Inside was a lovely dress, even lovelier than the one she wanted.
She quickly changed and had the most wonderful time.
3. I helped an elderly man with his groceries, and I learned acts of kindness make all the difference
Sarah would often see one of her neighbors, Mr. Thompson carry his groceries. But one day, they seemed heavier than before, so something inside her told her to stop and offer him some help. The old man accepted the help in a heartbeat. It was obvious the heavy bags were more than he could carry.
As they walked slowly, he shared stories of his youth with Sarah, and she enjoyed them.
When they arrive at his house, he invited Sarah in for a cup of tea. Knowing he could use some company, she gladly accepted and got inside. Mr. Thompson’s home was cozy. Everything was neat, and well organized.
Sarah realized he was living on his own and asked him about his family. Sadly, his sons and grandchildren barely visited him because they were busy with their own lives. In fact, it’s been a couple of years since they last stopped by.
Before Sarah left, Mr. Thompson gave her an envelope.
Inside the envelope was a small amount of money and a note that read, “Thank you for your selflessness, you made my day. Don’t forget that the acts of kindness are a gift that should always be shared.”
On her way home, Sarah spotted a homeless man and bought him something to eat. The smile on his face was the best “thank you” she could ever get.
She realized that Mr. Thompson’s words were wise and that the kindness we offer to others not only brightens their day, but can also change their lives.
