Will worked as a garbage man, a modest job he was proud of. But sadly, his son Kevin didn’t feel the same, and Will only learned that at Career Day when he realized everyone there believed he was a company owner. Although hurt by his son’s lie, he decided to play along.
It was yet another late night that Will was forced to work. When he finally got home, he was exhausted. His clothes carried a faint smell of rusty metal. His wife, Leslie, was folding the laundry when she greeted him and said, “You are late again, Will.”
With his face and hands covered in dirt, Will answered in a cracked voice, “One of the trucks broke down again, and I had to finish the route. You know we are tight with money, every cent matters.”
A bit concerned yet understanding, Leslie said, “I know, Will, but I’m worried about Kevin, you barely spend any time with him.”
Will changed his clothes and went to greet Kevin, who was playing video games in his room.
“Hey, dad,” he said without taking his eyes off the TV.
“I know Career Day is approaching. You know I work late and hard, but I’ll make sure I be there,” Will said.
However, instead of a smile, a sad expression landed on Kevin’s face. “You don’t have to come, dad, it’s fine.”
Will could sense something was going on. Was it possible that Kevin didn’t want him there? No, that couldn’t be. Will and Kev didn’t spend much time together, but Will knew his son loved him unconditionally.
On Career Day, Will replaced his work uniform with a nice suit and a tie.
Once at the school, he chatted with some of the parents and that’s when he realized Kevin told his teachers and his classmates that his dad was a wealthy businessman who owned a recycle company.
Believing he was an influential man, the parents wanted to be seen with Will.
When it was his turn to take the stage and speak of his career, Will looked at Kevin who seemed angry. Not wanting to embarrass him, he decided to play along.
“I’m Will, Kevin’s father, and I own a recycling business,” Will said, with the words barely coming out of his mouth. At that moment, he could see the relief on his son’s face.
After the presentation, Kevin approached his father. “Dad, about your job…” he said, unable to look his father in the eyes. “One of my classmates boasted about his father’s wealth all the time and pressured me to lie.”
“It’s fine, son, I understand,” Will said, but the sadness in his eyes said otherwise.
At that moment, Kevin took the microphone and said, “My dad works as a garbage man and I’m proud of him.”
People were confused at first, but as they understood what actually happened, they gave the father and son a loud applause.
Will hugged his son. It didn’t matter what people taught, the important thing was that his son loved him no matter what.
