I’ve never been one of those people who get annoyed easily. What’s more, I hate getting into arguments with people and that’s why I often take a step back even when I know I’m in the right. But this time, I finally decided to stand for myself.
It all happened just three days after Ryan and I got married. Up until that moment things looked fine, and except for some tiny arguments here and there, there weren’t really any red flags. But that particular night, he finally showed his true colors and I regretted I ever left myself being blindsided by him.
I came from work and got myself busy preparing some grilled chicken with mash potatoes. And once dinner was ready, Ryan told me to bring his sister Chloe, who is 24 and not a little kid, a plate on the couch because she was too busy watching TV. When I said no, because she could stand up and eat at the table, Ryan snapped and slapped me on the face.

The slap burned like fire, and the plate slipped right out of my hands and shattered on the floor.
“Look what you made me do,” Ryan kept screaming, shifting the blame entirely onto me.
“I didn’t make you do anything,” I told him, holding my ground and looking straight into his eyes. “You made your own decision to hit me.”
Chloe finally dragged her eyes away from the television, looking over from the living room. She seemed more annoyed than scared by her brother’s violent outburst. Ryan snapped his head toward her and barked, “Stay out of this.”
That was the exact moment real fear started clawing at my chest. We were standing in the townhouse I had bought entirely on my own, four years before I even met him, right here in Columbus. Yet Ryan was talking to me like I was some low-level employee who had botched a simple task.
When I tried to slip past him into the hallway to grab my phone and call the cops, he blocked my path.
“You’re my wife,” he yelled. “You do not call the police over a stupid argument.”
Then out of the blue, Chloe reacted in a way that surprised both me and her brother in the middle of the chaos. Just as Ryan reached forward to grab my phone off the counter, Chloe snatched it first, hid it behind her back, looked right at me, and yelled, “Go upstairs and lock the bedroom door. I’ll make the call.”
As they continued to argue, the police came knocking. It turned out Chloe had already managed to get through to 911.
That single call unraveled a terrifying web of lies. Chloe told Ryan he acted the same way he did with Melissa.
I was shocked. Melissa was his ex he told me died in a crash two years before we met. It turned out she very much alive. That’s when I realized she probably dumped him because he was violent against her, too, but he was so good at hiding that fact from me all those years.
It took the police all of five minutes to review the motion-activated security camera footage mounted right above the kitchen doorway, which captured the whole assault and proved Ryan was trying to frame me. They slapped the cuffs on him immediately.
As the officers dragged him toward the front door, Ryan looked back over his shoulder and spat, “You are ruining our marriage over nothing.”
In the morning, I asked Chloe about Melissa but she told me she wanted to stay out of it. She just gave me Melissa’s full name, and that was it.
When I searched her name on the social media and the public records, I found her petition for a protection order.
But then another name popped up, that of Ryan’s dad, Patrick.
I finally gathered the courage to call Melissa and the moment I introduced herself as Ryan’s wife, she said, “Go check your bank accounts before you lose everything.”
My hands were shaking so bad I could barely click the mouse. Sitting there in front of the computer, I found it, a seventy-five-thousand-dollar home equity line of credit application. Someone had signed my name on it, and looking closer, the signature had been lifted straight off our marriage license.
Ryan had spent months convincing me to hand over control of the household finances, sweet-talking me with that whole “married couples shouldn’t have secrets” routine. But it was all a setup. He and his dad, Patrick, had been scheming behind my back to steal my house right out from under me.
Later on, digging through an old laptop of his, I found the proof: message after message laying out the whole plot. He only married me because he thought I was “financially useful,” but he hated that I was too independent for his liking. He needed the money to dig himself out of a massive hole from online sports betting and a failing construction company run by one of his buddies.
With my lawyer Rachel, the kitchen security footage, and statements from Chloe, Melissa, and Ryan’s former friend Marcus, the case against him was ironclad.
Ryan eventually pleaded guilty to domestic abuse, forgery, attempted fraud, and violating a protective order, landing him an eighteen-month prison sentence. His father, Patrick, got off with a heavy fine, community service, and probation. On top of that, my marriage was officially annulled on the grounds of fraud.
I slowly took my life back into my own hands. The first thing I did was paint over every single wall in the house, getting rid of colors Ryan had insisted on. More importantly, I started building a genuine relationship with Chloe, a young woman who chose honesty and truth over blind family loyalty.
A few weeks later, sitting at the kitchen table eating dinner with Chloe on a quiet evening, she looked around the newly painted room and asked, “Have you ever wondered what would have happened if the police were never called that night?”
“Yes,” I replied, setting my fork down.
“And what do you think?”
“Ryan thought that night would teach me how the rest of our marriage was going to go,” I said. “But thanks to you, it taught me everything I needed to know about who he really was.”
