I hired a date to a backyard pool gathering where my ex-husband arrived with the woman he left me for

When I got married, I honestly believed it would last a lifetime, but I had no idea how wrong I was. After twenty long years of marriage, which by the way I believed was a happy one, my husband Jordan left me for another woman. So when my son Ethan wanted his dad present at his fifteenth birthday, I knew Jordan would bring Percy with him just to rub it in. Just thinking about him being there with her while I was all by myself, I was getting anxious. I knew I would look as the pathetic and discarded wife in front of all our neighbors and family who once watched Jordan and I build a life together.

And that’s when I decided to do something out of character. No matter how pathetic and desperate that made me, I contacted a local talent agency and hired an actor named Clark to play my boyfriend for the day. We sat down at a small coffee shop to run through our backstory before the big event. I felt completely ridiculous at first, but Clark turned out to be remarkably down-to-earth and easy to talk to. He didn’t judge me as a desperate, recently divorced mother; he just listened patiently as I vented about twenty years of raising kids alone while Jordan checked out and chased after younger women non stop.

By the time we left the coffee shop, I actually felt a flicker of optimism. But by Saturday afternoon, the backyard was a circus. Kids were splashing in the pool, music was blaring from the patio speakers, and neighbors were clustered around the grill.

Clark played his part like a pro: he stayed close by my side, handed me drinks, and chatted effortlessly with the guests. Even though I kept trying to relax, my eyes kept drifting toward the front gate, waiting for Jordan to show up. At this point, I knew for sure that he was coming with Percy, his tall and way younger secretary, because he actually texted me and told me he was bringing her because she was now his family.

When Jordan finally showed up, he shoved the gate open with one hand resting right on Percy’s dress. He scanned the yard, spotted me standing next to Clark, and his jaw just dropped. Then he let out this loud, mocking laugh right in front of everyone. He didn’t even lower his voice, shouting out some snide comment about how I must have had to hire a guy way out of my league just to save face, telling me to go take a long look in the mirror. Percy didn’t even try to hide her satisfaction and I felt my face burn with total humiliation, wishing the ground would just open up and swallow me whole.

Only thing was, Jordan had zero clue what had been going on behind his back before he even stepped foot in that yard.

Earlier, Ethan intercepted Clark and handed him a neatly wrapped box, telling him to deliver it to his father at the exact right moment.

Completely ignoring Jordan’s comments, Clark calmly reached over to the patio table and picked up the gift.

“Interesting,” Clark said. “It’s fun how you judge people purely by their looks. But your kids? They judged you based on something a lot harder to fake.”

Jordan stopped laughing instantly, his expression twisting into a dark scowl as he took the box. He ripped away the wrapping paper, popped off the cardboard lid, and watched the last bit of color drain entirely from his face. Inside weren’t any birthday trinkets or polite gifts. There was an old, faded photograph of a young Ethan riding proudly on his dad’s shoulders at a county fair, a thick stack of homemade Father’s Day cards covered in clumsy crayon drawings, and several printed screenshots showing months of unanswered text messages of Ethan asking if his dad was coming to his soccer games, begging him to just call back. At the very bottom lay a short, blunt note.

Percy, curious and leaning right over Jordan’s shoulder, decided to read the note aloud to the suddenly dead-silent yard:

“Since Percy is your new family, we figured you’d want these memories back.”

The only sound left in the backyard was the low hum of the pool filter. Jordan looked at Percy, and her face went from amused to disgusted in a second flat. She unclasped the pricey diamond bracelet Jordan had just bought her, dropped it right into the open gift box, and spun on her heel. She walked straight out the gate, leaving him standing there all by himself.

That’s when Jordan completely lost it in front of the whole neighborhood. He whipped around, started screaming at Ethan, and yelled that he was going to teach his kids some respect.

That was it for me. I stepped right between them and let him have it, telling him he had zero right to bully my kids after walking out on them. The second he realized all the neighbors were staring at him with pure disgust, he shut his mouth, turned around, and walked away.

As the heavy air finally cleared and people started drifting back to their conversations, Clark didn’t move an inch. His gig was officially over, but he stayed right where he was. He gave me a warm, genuine smile and asked if he could stick around, not because it was part of the contract, but because he actually wanted to be there.

I glanced over at the spot where my ex had just humiliated himself, then back at Clark, realizing I didn’t have to fake a single thing to feel happy anymore.
