A major health alert has been issued for anyone who consumes processed red meat

A new research, published by the Neurology journal, prompted scientists to issue a major warning about the consumption of processed red meat.

The findings of the research, which was conducted during the time period of more than 40 years, suggests that consumption of processed red meat is associated with dementia, and increases the chances of developing this condition by 13 percent.

As expected, these results may be shocking for those who enjoy these sorts of products and whose traditional cuisine includes them as staples.

Processed red meat products include ham, bacon, corned beef, and some sausages like salami, chorizo and hot dogs.

On the other hand, unprocessed red meat includes all fresh, minced, and frozen beef, pork and lamb.

The same research suggests that replacing processed red meat with alternative protein sources such as nuts, legumes, or fish could reduce the risk of dementia by approximately 20 percent.

The author of the study, Dong Wang, MD, ScD, of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston Massachusetts, spoke of the findings, saying, “Red meat is high in saturated fat and has been shown in previous studies to increase the risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease, which are both linked to reduced brain health.

“Our study found processed red meat may increase the risk of cognitive decline and dementia. But the good news is that it also found that replacing it with healthier alternatives, like nuts, fish and poultry, may reduce a person’s risk.”

Out of 133,771 people who took part in the research, and had no dementia, 11,173 developed it over the course of the study.

“Reducing how much red meat a person eats and replacing it with other protein sources and plant-based options could be included in dietary guidelines to promote cognitive health,” Wang said. “More research is needed to assess our findings in more diverse groups.”

In conclusion, this study can serve as an eye opener about our diet.
